A collaborative project with artist Mary Yacoob, Affordance Futurism explores how off-earth futures are designed, imagined, and rendered sensible through artistic and conceptual practice. It sits at the intersection of worldbuilding, speculative method, and the politics of environment and infrastructure.
As humanity ventures further beyond the terrestrial Earth into the cosmos, we shift our gaze back towards our home, viewing it from a new perspective. The fashionable rhetoric of outer space, influenced by NewSpace actors such as Jeff Bezos, Richard Branson, and Elon Musk, perpetuates colonial legacies and extends capitalist exploitation into the cosmos. The task, then, is to upend these legacies and assumptions to posit anti-colonial outer space futures. What do off-Earth futures look like in light of where we are now? What futures are we afforded when we critically analyse the past and present?
